jas3 and root

I am becoming really taken with jas3 as an analysis environment, especially the ability to look at event displays and ntuples together... and on Windows and Linux with equal ease to boot.
 
I cannot for some reason however, browse a root file created with RAT. I can look at root files downloaded from other places.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be?
